MACON, Ga. – The Mercer University baseball and men's soccer teams continued an annual tradition of joining the Miracle League of Macon for a weekend, participating in several games on Friday and Saturday at Peyton Anderson Miracle Field in the West Macon Park.
The men's soccer team played a game on Friday evening, while the baseball team followed with two games of its own on Saturday afternoon. The event pairs each Mercer player with special needs children of all ages to help him or her bat and play in the field.
"Working with the Miracle League this past Friday was an amazing experience for our program and student-athletes," said men's soccer head coach Brad Ruzzo. "We always want to be able to give back to the community and this was a great way to spend some time with their program and interact with the kids. Our players really appreciated the opportunity to have fun with the kids and look forward to cultivating our relationship with the Miracle League in the future."
The Miracle League of Macon (MLM) is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 2003. The Miracle League provides children with mental and/or physical challenges an opportunity to play baseball as a team member in an organized league.
"We always feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to give back to the Macon community and our time with the Miracle League is always one of the highlights of our community service efforts," said head baseball coach Craig Gibson. "It's an incredible organization that creates an amazing experience for the children and our entire team loves the opportunity to interact with the kids and join in on a fun day of baseball."
