ETSU names Claggett first-ever athletics head of DEI

Currently serves as ETSU Athletics Associate Director of External Operations

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Jerseys For Social Justice is an ETSU Athletics video campaign featuring the school’s Black student-athletes and coaches and their stories of being Black in America. Topics discussed throughout the series will include systematic racism, social justice, equality, police brutality and first-person accounts of individual racism in the lives of student-athletes and coaches.

Jerseys For Social Justice will feature six Black student-athletes, two Black coaches, administrators within athletics to discuss their support of the Black community at ETSU and beyond, as well as the top diversity and inclusion officers at the university to lend an expert point of view to the topics they dedicate their professional lives to.

The culminating week of Jerseys For Social Justice coincides with the NCAA’s diversity and inclusion social media campaign and concludes Thursday with ETSU President Dr. Brian Noland tabbing ETSU alumnus and current ETSU Athletics Associate Director of External Operations Calvin Claggett as the first head of diversity, equity and inclusion within the department, in addition to a more broad position throughout the university: “I’m extremely excited to announce that Calvin Claggett...has been promoted within the athletic department, and across the institution he’ll serve as Special Assistant to the Vice President for Equity and Inclusion...I can’t think of a more perfect person to do this job than Calvin...He’s poised, positioned and ready.”

Claggett feels his new role and responsibilities are ones that life has prepared him for since day one: “This position means everything to me. As a Black man in America the experiences I’ve had have shaped my passion for this. I look forward to serving the institution and region...and doing so for many years.”
