UNCG women's hoops team walks to fight hunger

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Every year, the UNCG women’s basketball team commits to serving the Greensboro community in different capacities. This past Sunday, the Spartans participated in the CROP Hunger Walk in Greensboro. This was the first time UNCG’s women’s basketball team has participated in the annual event, which was a 3-mile walk held at NewBridge Bank Park. Each year, the walk draws nearly 5,000 participants from the Greater Greensboro area.

“The CROP Hunger Walk was a great event right here in our city,” said head coach Wendy Palmer. “It was extremely important for us to show our support for this global issue. Our ladies love being out amongst the community and the walk was a fun way to join the energy and enthusiasm downtown.”

Each member of the women’s basketball team purchased a T-shirt at the event as a donation to the event’s fundraising efforts to fight hunger.

CROP Hunger Walks help to support the overall ministry of Church World Service, especially grassroots, hunger-fighting development efforts around the world. In addition, the Greater Greensboro CROP Hunger Walk & Run returns 25 percent of the funds it raises to Greensboro Urban Ministry's Potter's House Community Kitchen.

CROP Hunger Walks help to provide food and water, as well as resources that empower people to meet their own needs. From seeds and tools, to wells and water systems, to technical training and micro-enterprise loans, the key is people working together to identify their own development priorities, their strengths and their needs – something CWS has learned through some 66 years of working in partnership around the world.

Community service is important to the women’s basketball program at UNCG. Earlier this fall, the Spartans volunteered with the Greensboro Urban Ministry and helped with Backpack Beginnings.
