Komen Race for the Cure in downtown Birmingham Saturday morning. Players and coaches reported to the event at 6 a.m. on Saturday. They helped in several areas in setting up for the event. Susan G. Komen for the Cure was founded by Nancy Brinker in 1982 in memory of her sister, who died of breast cancer at age 36. Komen Race for the Cure started in 1983. The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Series raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrating breast cancer survivorship and honoring those who have lost their battle with the disease. With funds raised by the Komen Race for the Cure Series, Komen, along with its Affiliate Network, is able to fund breast cancer research grants, meritorious awards and educational, scientific and community outreach programs around the world.
