Furman Baseball Joins Fight Against Childhood Cancers

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman baseball team dropped an 8-5 decision to nationally sixth-ranked South Carolina on Tuesday at Fluor Field but the Paladins hit a grand slam against childhood cancer by raising nearly $9,000 through participation in "BaseBald For The Cure."

Approximately 24 Paladin players, plus the entire coaching staff, gathered on top of the Furman dugout following the game and had their heads shaved by barbers from Headlines Haircuts - all in an effort to benefit The St. Baldrick's Foundation, a volunteer driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives.

"I'm very proud of the initiative coach (Chris) Edwards and our players showed in getting Furman Baseball behind this most worthy effort," said Furman head coach Ron Smith. "We are more than pleased, and honored, to lend our team's collective ability and blessing as healthy collegiate baseball players and coaches in assisting other young people who face the challenge of fighting and beating cancer."

"BaseBald For The Cure" was initiated by Chase Jones, a former University of North Carolina baseball player and brain cancer survivor who underwent treatment in pediatric oncology alongside five and six-year olds - an experience that changed his life.

"I'm often asked what the toughest part about my cancer was. I can tell you from first-hand experience that chemo and radiation were rough, but nothing compared with the fact that while I was undergoing treatment, there were children much younger than me undergoing the same deal. They have no baseball team to fall back on, no education, no knowledge of what life was like outside of IV's and hospital rooms. No child deserves cancer. But if what we are doing helps a child look forward to their cancer treatment instead of filled with dread, then it is one step in the right direction."

Through individual fund-raising efforts by players and coaches, Furman's baseball team quickly topped its original goal of $2,500 and now has a goal of $10,000. Contributions can still be made through the team's St. Baldrick's Foundation website: http://www.stbaldricks.org/events/furman
