ELON, N.C. - For the seventh straight year, the Elon men's soccer team is teaming up with The V Foundation for Cancer Research to help raise money to fight the ongoing battle with cancer when it hosts the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Tuesday, October 26 at Rudd Field. All proceeds from a silent auction event will benefit The V Foundation.
"This is such an important event for our program because we know we are supporting such a worthy cause in The V Foundation," said Elon head men's soccer coach Darren Powell. "Jimmy V was an outstanding coach and a passionate individual that we all try to emulate. We hope to have our largest crowd this season at Rudd Field to watch a quality soccer game and help a great cause."
This year's silent auction will feature numerous autographed items from Elon athletic teams, Chivas USA, Colorado Rapids, New York Red Bulls, FC Dallas, Chicago Fire and others. A Chicago Fire jersey signed by Elon's own Steven Kinney '09 will be raffled off with tickets selling for only $5. The former Phoenix standout defender will be on hand to award the raffle winner with the jersey following the soccer contest.
Fans can buy raffle tickets and get a head start on the bidding, as several of these items will be available for bidding at the Elon Homecoming football game this Saturday. Among the items at the 1:30 p.m. football game will be a signed Chivas USA soccer ball, an Elon men's soccer jersey autographed by the 2010 squad and a Phoenix football shirt signed by this year's team. Start the bidding on Saturday and then get a look at the entire auction table during the Phoenix soccer game on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Elon and Wake Forest have met on the pitch on nine previous occasions with the Demon Deacons holding a 7-1-1 series advantage. Wake Forest will be the third Atlantic Coast Conference opponent for the Phoenix this season - Elon defeated Clemson, 1-0, and played Duke to a 1-1 draw. Last year, the sixth-ranked Deacons took the 2-1 victory over the Phoenix.
