Daniel Island, S.C. - The Citadel Athletics reassembled for the sixth consecutive year to participate in the 17th annual Susan G. Komen Lowcountry Race for the Cure on Saturday, Oct. 16. "Team Citadel Athletics," consisting of members of the Bulldog golf, soccer, tennis, track and field, volleyball and wrestling teams, in addition to members of the Athletics Department administration, were among a record crowd of over 10,000 people.

The team was established in 2005 by senior women administrator Kelly Simpson in an effort to have all female cadet-student-athletes participate in the race as a group community service project. In that year, the group consisted of approximately 40 participants. However, in recent years the men's track, tennis and wrestling teams have joined. Each year the group increases in participants and this year the group included its largest number with 169 people, claiming the Largest Collegiate Team Award for the third straight year.

Seventy-five percent of the net proceeds generated by the Komen Lowcountry Affiliate will stay in an area that services 13 counties to fund breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment projects. The remainder will go to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Award and Research Grant Programs. With events such as the race, over $2.5 million has been invested in grant funding for the region. The race has raised over $400,000 so far this year.
