SoCon Schools Raise Money to Fight Breast Cancer

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Student Athlete Advisory Committees (SAAC) in the Southern Conference conducted a league-wide community service project during January and February, raising more than $10,000 to support The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund?, held in conjunction with the WBCA Pink Zone?.

Yow, the legendary women’s basketball coach who was a UNC Greensboro alum and began her coaching career at Elon, lost her battle with cancer on Saturday, January 24, the day the SoCon kicked-off its Pink Zone campaign. Members of all the SAACs throughout the league sold Susan B. Koman pink shoelaces to raise funds to support this worthy cause. In addition to the pink shoe laces, each SAAC was encouraged to use their creativity in other ways to generate contributions.

Samford University was the top fundraisers among Southern Conference schools as its SAAC raised $3,375, and the 12 Southern Conference institutions combined to raise $10,678.34 to advance the fight against breast cancer.

“We are proud of the SAACs from all 12 SoCon institutions, and especially Samford, for their efforts in increasing awareness about the fight against breast and for raising money to support the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund?,” said Southern Conference Associate Commissioner Sue Arakas.

In honor of raising the highest total, Samford’s SAAC was awarded a cash prize of $500.
