CHARLESTON, S.C. - On Saturday February 7th, 2009, the College of Charleston volleyball team traveled to Hollywood, South Carolina to volunteer for the Sea Island Habitat for Humanity.  This past year, this particular location celebrated its 30th anniversary of providing low income homes to the community.  Throughout their efforts worldwide, Habitat for Humanity recently built its 300th house with the number of countries the program has touched spanning well over 100.  

At the site, the team worked with the site supervisor, as well as members from AmeriCorps.  A full time community service program, AmeriCorps is involved throughout the country with the goal of helping to improve the lives of others through volunteerism. In return they receive $4,725 of scholarship money towards undergraduate or graduate school.  Members of the team also got to work with the homeowner, providing them with a unique view of just how much their actions meant to the person benefiting from their involvement.   

During the day, the team worked on a number of areas of the house.  These included installing windows, working on the siding of the house and laying down shingles on the roof.  The players were split into different groups to work on the different areas of the house, however, everyone was more than willing to help out in all areas as needed.   

In addition to the satisfaction of having had a real impact on an individual’s life, the day was also a great team bonding experience. It was very touching for everyone to know just how important their efforts had been. The players truly enjoyed the experience and look forward to working with Habitat for Humanity again in the near future.
