GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Members of the Furman Paladins football team will assist the Greenville Area Interfaith Hospitality Network (GAIHN) in home renovation work on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of this week, head coach Bobby Lamb has announced.
From 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day, squad members will assist in demolition work and drywall installation, as well as preparing new footings for a load bearing wall at a residence located 212 Gower Street in West Greenville.
“GAIHN provides a tremendous and vital service to needy families in our community, and Furman football is very pleased with the opportunity to serve in this capacity,” said Lamb on Monday.
The mission of GAIHN is to assist local congregations to share hospitality in the form of emergency shelter and meals with homeless families, and to help those families achieve self sufficiency and self-fulfillment.
Fifteen Greenville-area churches generously use their Sunday school classrooms and other church facilities to offer homeless families safe lodging, nourishing meals, and genuine hospitality. Each church hosts the guest families for a week at a time, approximately four times a year on a rotating schedule. Thirteen other congregations provide volunteer services and support resources, including short-term transitional housing in units they own.
GAIHN’s program is unique because it is the only emergency shelter in Greenville for single mothers with sons who are age 10 and older.
This year at least 30 homeless families representing over 100 individuals will find home and hope through the distinctive generosity, innovation, and collaboration of a number of congregations of several faith traditions.
