<div class="payload-richtext">SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Seven Southern Conference (SoCon) teams competed in their region-specific NCAA Regional meets this weekend. Teams from South Carolina and North Carolina competed in the Southeast Regional meet, while teams from Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee competed in the South Regional meet. On the women’s side, Furman finished 12th of 36 in the Southeast Region, while Western Carolina finished 30th. SoCon Women’s Runner and Freshman of the Year, Tessa Walter, of Furman, had the highest finish among SoCon runners in the 6K coming in 27th with a time of 20:13.5. Leading the Catamounts was Katherine Hopkins who finished 137th with a time of 22:09.2. In the South Regional, the Mercer women finished 14th of 28, the Chattanooga women finished 20th , and the ETSU women finished 24th. The Bears’ Mary Grace Parker, 27th, was the highest finishing SoCon athlete with a time of 20:08.86. Maddie Wheatcroft led the Mocs, finishing 57th, while Sophie Beach led the Bucs, finishing 119th.  In the men’s 10K, Furman placed 7th of 33 and UNCG placed 22nd in the Southeast Regional. Three-time runner of the week, Chris Knight, finished 20th to lead all SoCon runners in the race with a time of 30:10.0. Khalid Abdullahi was the first Spartan to cross the finish line, running a time of 32:13.4.  Chattanooga, Mercer, Samford, and ETSU’s men finished 19th, 20th, 23rd, and 24th, respectively, of the 27 teams that competed in the South Region. The Mocs’ Jackson Martin finished 38th, leading all SoCon competitors, and finished the 10K with a time of 30:43.37. David Brown (Samford-89th), Yianni Pothoulakis (Mercer-90th), and William Harting (ETSU-116th) were the leading runners for their respective teams. The NCAA Cross Country Selection Committee will announce 14 at-large selections during a selection show on November 15th at 5 p.m. ET. </div>

<div class="payload-richtext">MILL SPRING, N.C. — Furman University continued its cross country success with both the men’s and women’s teams earning their 13th consecutive titles at the 2025 Southern Conference Cross Country Championships. Tessa Walter of Furman won the women’s individual race, while ETSU’s Jason Bowers claimed the men’s individual title. The women’s 5K race began at 10 a.m. Walter finished first with a time of 17:03.7, improving on her season-opening mark of 17:21.10, notching a season’s best. A three-time Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week honoree, Walter was named the 2025 Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Year and Freshman of the Year. She is the 13th consecutive women’s individual champion from Furman. Teammates Nysa Males and Rory Sullivan also placed in the top five, finishing second and fifth, respectively. Emma Jones, a business administration major, received the 2025 Women’s Pinnacle Award. The men’s 8K race followed at 10:45 a.m. Bowers led from the start and secured the individual title after a season that included three consecutive wins and three Runner of the Week honors. He was named the 2025 Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Year. Furman runners placed second through seventh in the men’s race, securing the team title. <div class="payload-richtext">MILL SPRING, N.C. -- The 2025 Ingles Southern Conference Cross Country Championships will be held on Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Tryon Equestrian Center in Mill Spring, N.C. This year’s championship marks two firsts with Tryon hosting for the first time, and Ingles becoming the title sponsor for the championship. The women’s 5K race begins at 10 a.m. ET, and the men’s 5K will follow at 10:45 a.m. ET. At the conclusion of the men’s race, there will be an awards ceremony to recognize the top teams and individual runners.  The Furman men’s and women’s squads are both 12-time defending champions of the event. The Paladins claimed the 2024 team titles on their home course. Both individual title winners, Dylan Schubert and Carly Wilkes, shattered course records during the championship en route to earning Runner of the Year honors. Furman’s Colin Eckerman was also named Freshman of the Year on the men’s side a year ago. Not only did Furman sweep the team champion and runner of the year honors, but Coaches Rita Gary and Robert Gary also claimed SoCon Coach of the Year honors on their home course.  The Western Carolina men and the Samford women each ranked second in their respective 2025 preseason coaches' polls behind the Paladins, matching their finishes from last year’s championships. Furman’s men are ranked seventh in the latest USTFCCA southeast regional poll. Mercer and Furman’s women’s teams are ranked 13th in the south and southeast region, respectively.  ETSU’s Jason Bowers owns the top 8k time in the conference this season, after running a 23:19.20 on Oct.18 at the South Region Showdown. The Bucs’ redshirt junior claimed three straight individual wins to finish out the regular season and was named the conference Runner of the Week three times this season.  On the women’s side, Chattanooga’s Maddie Wheatcroft tops the conference in the 5k after running a 17:20.89 at the Southern Showcase on Sept. 12.  Admission to the 2025 Southern Conference Cross Country Championship includes a $10 parking fee. <div class="payload-richtext">SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Kate Bannigan has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week following all competition held October 8-14. The Furman women traveled to Charlotte, North Carolina, on October 10 for the Royals Cross Country Challenge.  Bannigan led the Paladins and all SoCon runners, placing seventh in the event. Bowers surged from 39th place at the 2.1-kilometer split to claim his second consecutive race victory. The ETSU redshirt junior crossed the finish line in 23:23.0—15 seconds ahead of the runner-up—earning his third Runner of the Week honor this season. Mercer’s women’s team raced in a competitive field of 14 teams at the Georgia Tech Invitational. Freshman Mary Grace Parker led the Bears with a fourth-place finish, clocking in at 20:56.3. It marked her second time as Mercer’s top finisher this season. The Wilsonville, Alabama native helped pace the Bears to a second-place team finish. Both teams are preparing for their final tune-ups ahead of the Southern Conference Championship. SoCon announces cross country athletes of the week 

<div class="payload-richtext">SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU’s Jason Bowers and Mercer’s Nichole Harris have been named The Southern Conference men’s and women’s cross-country runners of the week, respectively, after all competition September 11-16. Both ETSU and Mercer competed at the Southern Showcase hosted by Jacksonville State on September 12. A native of Parys, South Africa, Bowers finished sixth with a time of 23:27.01 in the men’s  8000m run. The Bucs finished 17th in the 48-team field.  Harris, a senior with the Bears program, finished 21st in the field of 100 runners in the women’s 5000m run. The Ocala, Florida native helped pace Mercer to claim 8th place in the 53-team field. ETSU will visit the Hokies of Virginia Tech on September 19, while Mercer will visit fellow Peach State program Georgia Tech on October 3 to continue the 2025 season. </div>

<div class="payload-richtext">SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman has been picked to win its 13th straight men’s and women’s Southern Conference cross country titles in voting of the league’s 10 head coaches, who could not vote for their own teams. Both Paladin squads, who have won each SoCon championship since 2013, received all nine possible first place votes for a total of 81 points. With the win at the 2024 SoCon Cross Country Championship on their home course, on Nov. 2, the Furman men, who claimed seven of the top ten individual spots, extended the league record for consecutive SoCon team titles—a distinction the Paladins claimed in 2023. The Furman women captured five of the top 10 individual spots, extending its own league record with a 12th straight team title. Western Carolina’s men, who finished second to the Paladins in 2024, were predicted to finish second, securing the remaining first-place vote en route to a total of 65 points. The Catamounts were followed by Samford with 62 points, UNCG and Mercer, who had 56 and 45 points, respectively. ETSU and Chattanooga followed closely, with 42 and 41 points, respectively. VMI came in eighth with 28 points, before Wofford (19) and The Citadel (11) rounded out the poll.  In the women’s poll, 2024 championship runner-up Samford was slotted second with 71 points and the remaining first-place vote. Chattanooga mirrored its 2024 finish, ranking third in the preseason poll with 63 points. ETSU was fourth in the poll with 56 points, while Mercer collected 46. Western Carolina was picked sixth with 44 points, ahead of UNCG, which garnered 36 points. 2024 Cross Country Championship

<div class="payload-richtext">NEW ORLEANS – Seven Southern Conference men’s cross country teams and seven SoCon women’s teams were named <a href="https://www.ustfccca.org/2024/02/featured/2023-ustfccca-college-program-divisions-cross-country-academic-awards">
 NCAA Division I Cross Country All-Academic Teams on Thrusday
 </a>, while nine student-athletes were named All-Academic Athletes by the USTFCCCA. ETSU, Furman, Mercer, Samford, Chattanooga, UNCG and Wofford saw both their men’s and women’s teams honored. The Bucs’ Jason Bowers and Evan Guzman and Chattanooga’s Lesley Green represented their schools with individual honors. Paladins’ Dylan Schubert, Kaylie Armitage, Sierra Bower, Jenna Mulhern, Carly Wilkes, and Abigail Robertson also claimed individual honors. In order to qualify for All-Academic distinction, teams must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, including the most recent grading period.  Academic All-SoCon history
 </a> SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Four hundred and forty three student-athletes earned spots on the Fall 2023 Academic All-Southern Conference Team, the league office announced Thursday. Each of the SoCon's 10 full member institutions had at least 26 honorees, representing the sports of men's and women's cross country, football, men's and women's soccer and volleyball. To be eligible for the academic all-conference team, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average at the conclusion of the fall semester and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams' competitions during the recently concluded campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least three semesters at their institutions, making true freshmen and first-year transfers ineligible for inclusion. Thirty-six student-athletes have maintained perfect 4.0 cumulative GPAs, with Mercer leading the way with seven. The league's nine Football teams led the way with 126 academic all-conference selections, while the 10 women's soccer teams were second with 111 and the 10 women's cross country programs were third with 61. The nine volleyball teams had 53 selections, the six men's soccer teams had 50 selections and the 10 men's cross country teams followed with 42. Furman led all schools with 62 members on the academic all-conference team, followed by ETSU with 58. Samford and Wofford finished with 57 and 48 selections, respectively. The 443 total selections are the most in SoCon history and the 36 perfect GPAs is the second-most selections. The record of 37 perfect GPAs was set in the fall of 2021. </div>

<div class="payload-richtext"><h1>Bowers finishes 22nd at NCAA Championship</h1>CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – ETSU's Jason Bowers loves the big stage.    It showed on Saturday as the Buccaneer newcomer earned All-American honors after placing 22nd at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, which was held at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville, Va.    Bowers finished the 10K course with a time of 29:32.7. In a field of 254 runners, the Buccaneer sophomore waited patiently and climbed up the leaderboard throughout the race to finish in the top-25. Bowers was in 95th at the 1000m mark and moved into the top-50 (47th) at the midway point of the race. With 3000m remaining, Bowers was in 35th and he kicked it into another gear as he jumped 13 runners down the stretch to move into 22nd.    Harvard's Graham Blanks won the race with a time of 28:37.7, while New Mexico's Habtom Samuel (28:40.7) and Stanford's Ky Robinson (28:55.7) also finished on the podium.    Oklahoma State won the team title as the second-ranked Cowboys finished with 49 points and top-ranked Northern Arizona finished second with 71 points.    Bowers capped off an illustrious first year in the Blue & Gold which saw him set two school records, win two individual titles, earn three Southern Conference Runner of the Week honors, finish runner-up at the SoCon Championship and fifth at the NCAA Regional and be named SoCon Runner of the Month for September.   <h1>FURMAN'S SCHUBERT EARNS SECOND-CONSECUTIVE ALL-AMERICA CITATION AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP</h1>EARLYSVILLE, VA. -- Furman's Dylan Schubert earned his second-consecutive All-America citation Saturday at the 2023 NCAA Cross Country Championships at Panorama Farms in Earlysville, Va., while the 13th-ranked Paladin women's team placed 24th. A senior from Loveland, Colo., Schubert, who earned the fourth cross country All-America scroll in the history of the Paladin men's program, turned in a time of 29:35.5 on the 10K course to place 24th.  The 2023 SoCon Men's Runner of the Year, he won the men's individual title the NCAA Southeast Region Championship last Friday, setting a new course record and becoming the first individual region champion in the history of the Furman cross country program.  Schubert is the first two-time All-American in Furman men's cross country history after placing 11th at last year's championship. On the women's side, sophomore Carly Wilkes paced the Paladins with a time of 20:33.0 on the 6K course, taking 80th place.  No. 2 N.C. <div class="payload-richtext">FURMAN TO COMPETE AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP SATURDAY GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The 13th-ranked Furman women's cross country team, plus seniors Dylan Schubert and Carson Williams from the men's team, will compete at the NCAA Championship meet Saturday at Panorama Farms in Earlysville, Va.  Approximately 5,000 fans are expected to attend the sold-out event.  Saturday's meet will be broadcast live on ESPNU with a pre-race show beginning at 9:30 a.m.  The women's 6K race will begin at 10:20 a.m., followed by the men's 10K race at approximately 11:10 a.m.  The awards presentation will be streamed live on WatchESPN and the ESPN app beginning at noon.The Paladin women, who, along with the men's team, each won their 11th-straight Southern Conference title in 2023, are making their fifth trip to the national championship meet.  The Paladins placed seventh at the national meet in 2017 and posted a ninth-place finish in 2019.  Furman most recently appeared at the national championships in 2020, when the Paladins finished 31st.Furman is led by senior Abigail Robertson, the 2023 SoCon Women's Runner of the Year, who won the individual title at the league championships and went on to finish 15th at the region championships.  She was joined on the all-region team by junior Kaylie Armitage, who placed 13th at the region meet, plus sophomore Carly Wilkes, who finished 16th, and junior Sierra Bower, who placed 17.  Sophomore Jenna Mulhern finished 21st, also earning a spot on the all-region team.  Senior Bethany Graham, along with sophomore Emma Jones, complete the Paladin roster for Saturday's meet.  Seniors Madelynne Cadeau and Nicole Matysik will travel as alternates.Schubert won the men's individual title at Friday's championship.  He posted a personal-best time of 28:51.2 to win the 10K race, setting a new course record and becoming the first individual region champion in the history of the Furman cross country program.  Schubert, who was competing in just his third regional as regional meets were not contested in 2020, collected his third-consecutive all-region citation.  Williams, who earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship, finished 13th after recording a personal-best time of 29:27.6 at the regional meet. Last year, both Schubert and Graham earned All-America citations at the NCAA Championship.  Schubert finished 11th, while Graham posted a 27th-place finish. Bowers Set for NCAA Championships CHARLOTTESVILLE, N.C. –The 2023 Cross Country season will come to completion Saturday morning at the NCAA National Cross Country Championships hosted by the University of Virginia at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville, V.A.    In a field of 31 teams and 38 individual competitors, ETSU's Jason Bowers will be the sole competitor representing the Blue and Gold. Bowers finished the 10K course with a time of 28:51.3.    Bowers is the first Buccaneer men's runner to qualify for a NCAA Championship since Ben Varghese accomplished the feat in 2019.    On Friday, Bowers started off in 12th at the 1000m checkpoint at 2:53.7, while he moved into fifth at the 4000m mark (11:49.3). After dropping to seventh at the 6100m mark, Bowers jumped back into fifth with nearly 3000m left in the race and stayed in that position until the finish.  The Bucs were also led by Evan Guzman who finished 25th with a time of 29:41.4. Guzman set a new PR on a 10K course on Friday.    Bowers will run in the NCAA Championship, which will be held next Saturday, Nov. 18 at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville, Va. Cross Country Caps Off Record Season at NCAA South Regional Macon, Ga. - The Mercer cross country teams competed at the NCAA DI South Region Championships on Friday at Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla. The women's team finished 21st, led by Kamila Soja who crossed in 19th place on the way to earning NCAA All-Region honors. Kamila Soja continued her trend of overtaking every top spot in the Mercer cross country record books. Her 19th place finish (19:08.7) is the highest of any individual runner for Mercer and makes her the first runner in Mercer history to earn NCAA All-Region honors. "Kamila has had a very impressive season of consistent improvement," said head coach Josh Hayman. "Earning an All-Region spot in one of the toughest regions in the country is a testament to her hard work and sacrifice she has made this year." Lesley Boyd Earns All-Region Honors Chattanooga, Tenn. - Chattanooga's Lesley Boyd earned all-region honors Friday morning at the NCAA South Region Championships hosted by the University of Florida at the Mark Bostick Golf Course. The women finished 16th and the men came on late to finish 17th.   The women's 6-kilometer race got off to an early start at 8:30 a.m. All seven women posted personal best times in the event led by Boyd. She ran with the lead pack at the start of the race and steadily climbed throughout, moving up 11 spots to her final 22nd place finish. She ran a personal best time of 19:13.4 beating out her previous best time by more than two-and-a-half minutes.  </div>
