Chattanooga erases 20-point deficit in comeback win; Samford stays undefeated in SoCon play

VMI 66, Western Carolina 50

VMI - The VMI basketball team held strong to a one-point halftime lead with great execution on both ends of the court to claim a 66-50 win over visiting Western Carolina Wednesday night at Cameron Hall.
 
With the win, VMI improves to 7-11, 1-4 on the year while the Cats fall to 5-11, 1-4 for the season.

WCU - Senior Bernard Pelote led Western Carolina with 14 points, but a cold-shooting second half coupled with VMI finishing with 10 3-pointers helped push the Keydets past the Catamounts 66-50 on Wednesday night from Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va.

Samford 75, Mercer 74

SAM - The Samford men's basketball program hit the road tonight in Southern Conference play as they squared off with the Mercer Bears. After looking like they were in control of the game, the Bulldogs had to hold on late for a 75-74 victory to move to 15-3 overall and 5-0 in the SoCon to sit atop the league.

MER -  Ahmad Robinson scored a career high 29 points, but a Samford free throw with less than one second on the clock gave the Bulldogs a 75-74 win over the Bears Wednesday night from Hawkins Arena.
Robinson caused problems for Samford's defense all night on his way to 29 points including 12-14 from the free throw line and added nine rebounds, four assists and five steals on the night.

Chattanooga 83, Wofford 81 (OT)

UTC - Down 20 points in the first nine minutes of the game, the Chattanooga Mocs men's basketball team responded with a stingy defensive effort and saw clutch moments down the stretch to earn an 83-81 overtime victory over Wofford in thrilling Southern Conference action inside McKenzie Arena on Wednesday night.
 
Chattanooga (11-7, 3-2 SoCon) fell behind 31-11 just 9:18 into the contest after Wofford (9-9, 3-2 SoCon) started with an efficient shooting attack. The Mocs cut into the deficit over the course of the first half to eventually trail by 12, 46-34, at the halftime break.

WOF - The Wofford men's basketball team (9-9, 3-2) fell to the Chattanooga Mocs (11-7, 3-2) 83-81 on a game-winning shot in the final seconds of overtime on Wednesday night at McKenzie Arena.
 
The Terriers were led by three double-digit scorers. Justin Bailey had himself a night, scoring a career-high 22 points powered by five makes from deep. Dillon Bailey posted a season-high of 21 points and scored the final six points in overtime for the team. Kyler Filewich rounded out the group with 12 points. It is the first time since 2023 against Coastal Carolina that two Terriers have scored 20 or more points in the same game (Jeremy Lorenz 22, Dillon Bailey 21).

UNCG 70, The Citadel 57

UNCG -  The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team extended its home win streak to seven behind a 70-57 victory over The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe The Citadel on Wednesday night at First Horizon Coliseum.   
 
This was the fifth game this season where at least four Spartans scored double figures. Donovan Atwell paced the Spartans with 19 points. Joryam Saizonou tallied a career-high 16 points and 10 assists for his first-career double-double. This was the first game that a Spartan tallied 10 or more dimes in a game since Kobe Langley registered 11 assists on Jan. 13, 2024, at Chattanooga. Langley had three games last season with 10 or more assists in a game.

CIT - The Citadel basketball team was unable to erase an early 10-0 deficit, falling to the second-place UNCG Spartans 70-57 on Wednesday evening.
Brody Fox registered double-digit points for the fourth straight game, 21 points, while Colby McAllister added 10 and three steals.

Furman 73, ETSU 70

FUR - Furman's defense held East Tennessee State without a field goal for a stretch of 6:45 in the final minutes and PJay Smith Jr. converted on 3-of-4 trips to the foul line in the final 12 seconds to lift the Paladins to a 73-70 Southern Conference victory over the Buccaneers on Wednesday night at Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
 
With the victory, Furman upped its record to 15-3 overall and 3-2 in the SoCon while the Bucs slipped to 10-8 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

ETSU -  In a game featuring 12 ties and 13 lead changes, the ETSU men's basketball team was edged by Furman 73-70 on Wednesday night inside Bon Secours Wellness Arena.
 
Trailing by eight with less than 40 seconds remaining, the Bucs mounted a late comeback to pull within a point with 4.9 left in the contest. Following a foul by Karon Boyd, Furman hit both free throws to go up by three with 2.1 seconds left and the Paladins hung on after Quimari Peterson's halfcourt shot hit the backboard, bounced to the front of the rim and popped out at the buzzer.
