SPARTANBURG, S.C. –&nbsp;The Samford Bulldogs are the preseason favorites to win the 2024-25 men’s basketball title in polling of the league’s 10 head coaches, while Chattanooga senior guard Trey Bonham is the coaches’ selection as the preseason player of the year. &nbsp; The coaches, who also picked a 10-member preseason all-conference team, were not allowed to vote for their own teams or student-athletes as part of the balloting. Six different programs were represented on the preseason All-SoCon squad, with ETSU, Samford, Chattanooga and Wofford all receiving two selections. &nbsp; Samford collected six first-place votes and 77 points in the preseason poll. Head coach Bucky McMillan, who is the reigning three-time Anton Foy Coach of the Year, led his team to a 29-6 last season en route to scoring the third-most points in a season in conference history, finishing with 3,012 as a team. After winning the regular season title with a 15-3 league mark, Samford went on to win the SoCon tournament, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2000. The Bulldogs placed two players on the preseason All-SoCon team, with graduate student Rylan Jones making the squad alongside Tulane transfer Collin Holloway.Chattanooga checked in second in the poll with 73 points and two first-place votes. The Mocs, led by head coach Dan Earl, went 21-12 overall and 12-6 in SoCon play during the 2023-24 season. The Chattanooga backcourt consists of Bonham and Honor Huff, both of whom are members of the preseason all-conference team. Bonham averaged 16.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.8 steals per game last season in 22 games played, leading to him being a first-team all-conference selection following the season.ETSU is third in the preseason poll with 67 points and the final two first-place votes. The Bucs were 19-16 last season with an 8-10 conference mark, but finished strong down the stretch of the season, culminating in a SoCon Tournament championship game appearance. Guard Quimari Peterson and forward Jaden Seymour represent the squad on the preseason team.Wofford came in fourth with 58 points. The Terriers finished the 2023-24 season with a 10-8 SoCon record and 17-15 overall ledger. Senior guard Corey Tripp and senior center Kyler Filewich made the preseason all-conference team for Wofford.Furman checks in at No. 5 in the poll, earning 47 points. Senior guard PJay Smith Jr. is on the preseason all-conference team. UNCG finished in sixth place in the preseason poll with 41 points, with junior Donovan Atwell rounding out the preseason team.Mercer (35), Western Carolina (25), The Citadel (17) and VMI (10) rounded out the poll. The Bears and the Catamounts are both under the direction of new head coaches. SPARTANBURG, S.C.&nbsp;– The Southern Conference announced its 2024-25 men’s basketball league schedule Tuesday. The SoCon’s 10 men’s basketball teams will all play double-round-robin, 18-game intraleague schedules, totaling 90 league contests over nine weeks from Wednesday, Jan. 1, to Saturday, March 1.&nbsp;All 10 teams open league play on Jan. 1. After another full lineup of games on Saturday, Jan. 4, the schedule settles into a Wednesday-Saturday format outside a pair of Thursday games on Jan. 9 and Feb. 27. UNCG versus Chattanooga and VMI against Samford will be the home-and-home matchups on those two Thursdays. Additional games might later be moved due to national television assignments.Among other notable games on the slate this season, Samford hosts ETSU on Saturday, Jan. 18, in a matchup of the two squads that squared off for the tournament title back in March. The teams face off again exactly three weeks later at ETSU.Mercer’s Ryan Ridder, who comes to Macon after three seasons as the head man at UT Martin, begins his first stint through the league when the Bears host Chattanooga. Western Carolina’s Tim Craft, who served as the head coach at Gardner-Webb for the last 11 seasons, opens his first season in Cullowhee at home versus Furman on New Year’s Day.The 2025 Ingles Southern Conference Basketball Championship will take place at Harrah’s Cherokee Center – Asheville in Asheville, North Carolina, from March 7-10.&nbsp;Full broadcast schedules will be announced later, but all 10 schools’ home games will air on ESPN+ if not selected for national or regional broadcast. Five SoCon regular-season games and three tournament games aired on ESPN networks last season, while another five regular-season contests aired on CBS Sports Network. The league broadcast schedule will also continue to feature its Ingles SoCon Game of the Week on select Nexstar affiliates throughout the Southeast.&nbsp;The 104th season of Southern Conference basketball opens with nonconference play on Monday, Nov. 4.&nbsp;For the <a href="https://soconsports.com/calendar.aspx?path=mbball">composite league schedule, visit SoConSports.com</a>. UNCG Men’s Basketball Retires Numbers of Francis Alonso and Isaiah Miller

Spartanburg, S.C.&nbsp;– The Southern Conference and Athletic Sun Conference announced a two-year scheduling alliance for men’s basketball on Wednesday. Each SoCon team will play two games against ASUN opponents through this alliance, games will take place in early November and December.This agreement comes in response to the emphasis placed on NET rankings for postseason prospects and an ever-changing landscape in college athletics which, for many, has made it difficult to fill a 30-game schedule with quality opponents.The Southern Conference Commissioner, Michael Cross, said, “We are very excited to partner with the ASUN to form a two-year scheduling alliance.&nbsp; It is apparent to anyone involved in men’s basketball that the current scheduling process is flawed and that getting two teams to agree to play one another is incredibly difficult.&nbsp; As NCAA Tournament access has continued to erode for mid-major programs and conference schedules expand due to conference realignment, identifying meaningful non-conference games against attractive regional opponents has become very important.&nbsp; Leadership from the Directors of Athletics in both conferences and willingness from the coaches to experiment with this concept were the necessary ingredients to establish this alliance.&nbsp; Their willingness to recognize that change is needed in scheduling took vision and compromise.&nbsp; I’m confident this will be a very beneficial partnership for both the SoCon and the ASUN.”The men’s basketball scheduling alliance will feature attractive matchups across both rounds, providing a memorable experience and new level of excitement to the fans of all 22 schools. 2024 Ingles SoCon Basketball Championships ticket info

KANSAS CITY, Mo. –&nbsp;The&nbsp;<a href="https://nabc.com/nabc_releases/2024/nabc-names-division-i-all-district-teams-coaches-of-the-year/">NABC has released the 2023-24 NABC Division I All-District Teams and District Coaches of the Year</a>, with the District 21 teams comprising 10 Southern Conference student-athletes and Samford's Bucky McMillan named the District 21 Coach of the Year.

 The All-District honors are voted on by NABC-member coaches across NCAA Division I.
 &nbsp;
 SoCon Player of the Year Vonterius Woolbright of Western Carolina was joined on the all-district first team by Furman's JP Pegues, UNCG duo Mikeal Brown-Jones and Keyshaun Langley and Samford's Achor Achor.
 &nbsp;
 The second team included Mercer's Jalyn McCreary, Samford's Rylan Jones, Chattanooga's Trey Bonham and Honor Huff and Wofford's Corey Tripp.
 &nbsp;
 Langley earned his second straight first-team all-district selection, while Woolbright was a second-team pick last year.
 &nbsp;
 McMillan led Samford to its first outright SoCon regular-season championship this season as well as the Bulldogs' first SoCon tournament title since the program joined the league in 2008.

 No. 13 seed Samford, making its first NCAA appearance in 24 years, will take on No. 4 seed Kansas in the first round of the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship on Thursday in Salt Lake City, Utah, at 9:55 p.m. ET on TBS.
