Saturday's men's basketball roundup

ETSU hands Samford its first conference defeat

VMI 75, The Citadel 70

VMI - The VMI basketball team took down The Citadel for the second time in three years at McAlister Fieldhouse as the Keydets earned a 75-70 SoCon victory Saturday afternoon in Charleston, South Carolina.
VMI's victory is significant in that it marked the Keydets' second league victory in a row, which had not happened in three years since the 2021-22 season.

CIT - The Citadel basketball team trailed by five at halftime before a quick start to the second half by the Virginia Military Institute Keydets helped them open up a 16-point lead that was too big to overcome as they held on for a 75-70 win on Saturday afternoon.
Brody Fox scored 18 points to go along with six assists and five rebounds. Colby McAllister also netted 18 with seven boards and a pair of steals.

UNCG 83, Western Carolina 55

UNCG - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team claimed an 83-55 win over The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Western Carolina at the Ramsey Center on Saturday evening.

This was the Spartans' eighth straight win over the Catamounts, and UNCG has taken 16 of the last 17 games.

WCU - Redshirt sophomore guard Cord Stansberry led the way with 18 points and five rebounds, but Western Carolina was unable to overcome sluggish second-half shooting and 15 3-poiners by UNC Greensboro as the Spartans claimed an 83-55 victory in Southern Conference men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon on Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center.

Chattanooga 75, Furman 71

UTC - For the second-straight game, the Chattanooga Mocs men's basketball team eliminated an early deficit and used a strong second-half effort to come away victorious, earning a 75-71 win at Furman inside the Ben Secours Arena in Greenville, S.C., in Southern Conference action.

Chattanooga (12-7, 4-2 SoCon) fell behind by a sizable 16-point margin, 22-6 (1st, 9:14), to Furman (15-4, 3-3 SoCon) before eventually chipping away at the deficit to enter the halftime break down just seven, 34-27. The Mocs used a 48-37 advantage in the second half which included a 16-of-18 (88.9%) performance from the free-throw line to help seal the comeback victory.

FUR - Chattanooga converted on 25-of-28 trips to the foul line and rallied from a 13-point second half deficit to down Furman, 75-71, in Southern Conference men's basketball action Saturday at Bon Secours Wellness Arena.

Wofford 69, Mercer 49

WOF - The Wofford men's basketball team (10-9, 4-2) held the Mercer Bears (9-10, 2-4) to 29.8 percent shooting in a 69-49 win at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium on Saturday night.

"We knew we had to muster up a lot of fight tonight," said head coach Dwight Perry. "Toughness was going to win this game. Credit to our guys. That was a great and total team effort, and a lot of guys stepped up and delivered tonight."

MER -  Alex Holt led Mercer with 11 points on what was a tough shooting night as a team for the Bears as Wofford defeated Mercer 69-49 Saturday night from Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Holt had 11 points on just six field goal attempts to go with four rebounds. Brady Shoulders came off the bench to score eight points to go with a team high eight rebounds.

ETSU 65, Samford 60

ETSU - Defense travels and it did so in a big way for the Buccaneers on Saturday night in Birmingham.

Playing in front the second-largest crowd in Samford history, the ETSU men's basketball team silenced the Bulldogs and the 4,723 fans, as the Buccaneers snapped Samford's 28-game home win streak with a 65-60 victory on CBS Sports Network.
