VMI’s Johnson named SoCon Player of the Week

Junior averages a double-double in the first week of the season

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – VMI forward TJ Johnson has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for all contests from Nov. 3-9. The award is selected by the league office.
 
Johnson logged 19 points, 10 rebounds and three assists in the team’s 122-58 season-opening win against Johnson & Wales on Nov. 3. In the team’s next game, the junior finished with 32 points, 14 rebounds, three assists and three steals in a 78-74 road win over Southern Indiana on Nov. 7. Two days later, the native of Belton, Texas, recorded another 30-point game in a setback at Missouri, finishing with 31 points, seven rebounds and two steals.

 

For the week, Johnson averaged 27.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.7 steals. Johnson shot 48 percent from the field and was a perfect 22-for-22 from the charity stripe.

 

VMI (2-1) hosts Virginia Lynchburg on Wednesday at 6 p.m. before welcoming Jacksonville on Saturday at 1 p.m.
