Elon Powers Past UNC Greensboro, 9-3

CHATTANOOGA, TN -- Elon registered 14 hits and nine runs to down UNC Greensboro in the opening round of the 2004 Southern Conference Championships, 9-3, on Thursday afternoon.

Elon was quick to get on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Jessica Swearengin led off the game with a single to left field before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jenny Gustin. Swearengin moved to third on a Jamie Dupont single before coming home on a sacrifice hit by Megan Borgaard.

In the bottom of the second inning, Elon added two more runs. With the bases loaded, Gustin reached second on an error by the right fielder to send Christina Melton and Dani Concepcion home and put Elon ahead 3-0.

UNC Greensboro answered in the top of the third inning when Christina Montana doubled and Jennifer Hubbard doubled to drive her home. With Hubbard on second, Joni Gomez singled to plate Hubbard and cut the lead to one at 3-2.
