Elon Softball Sweeps Doubleheader From Furman

ELON, N.C. -- The Elon Phoenix softball squad upped its record to 27-16-1 overall and 9-5 in Southern Conference play with a doubleheader sweep of Furman on Saturday afternoon at East Field by scores of 4-2 and 4-3. The Lady Paladins now stand at 11-37, 4-7 on the season.

Furman opened the scoring in game one when LaKerah Barr, who had reached on a single, scored on a Megan Jaudon single to center. The Phoenix evened the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the second after Megan Borgaard led off with a single to center. A sacrifice, a fielder's choice that failed to yield an out and a bunt single loaded the bases for Elon. Christina Melton then singled home Borgaard with Elon's first run of the game.

Kristin White singled to start the third for the Lady Paladins and came around to score on a two-out single off the bat of Jaudon.

In the fifth the Phoenix again knotted the score. This time a Jamie Dupont double drove home Dani Concepcion. Elon added two more runs in the sixth for the final margin. With two outs, Melton walked and then Paige Goss singled to left to put runners on first and second. Concepcion promptly doubled home both runners to put Elon ahead by two runs. Elon pitcher Megan Borgaard then fanned all three hitters she faced in the seventh to end the game.

Borgaard improved her record to 6-2 with her complete game. She allowed five hits and two runs while walking only one and striking out 11 Furman hitters. Rachel Henley suffered the loss, falling to 8-17 on the year. She went 6.0 innings and allowed nine hits and four runs. Henley walked one and fanned one.

Elon jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in game two after plating three unearned runs in the first. Concepcion led off with a single. After one out was recorded, Dupont walked and Borgaard reached on a fielder's choice. It was here that the trouble began for Furman. On Borgaard's fielder's choice, the second baseman made an errant throw that allowed Concepcion to score. After a second out was recorded, Meredith Miley singled to center to plate both Borgaard and Dupont.

Furman cut the deficit to 3-1 in the fourth inning when Jessica Matthews scored on a Kristy Goodrich single. Elon upped the margin to three runs in the sixth when a Natalie Layden single scored Borgaard.

The Lady Paladins tried to rally in the seventh inning as Goodrich singled to lead off the frame. With one out, Kristin White singled to put runners on first and second. After the second out was recorded JoDee Eichelberger singled to score Goodrich. A throwing error on the play also allowed White to score. Jaudon was then retired on a groundout to end the rally and the game.

Whitney Meeks picked up the win for Elon, moving to 11-6 on the year. Meeks hurled all seven innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits. She walked one and K'ed four. Goodrich took the loss to fall to 3-10 after allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits. She walked one and struckout two.

The Phoenix offense was paced by Concepcion who went 3-for-7 with two runs scored and two RBI on the afternoon. Borgaard finished the day 2-for-6 with three runs scored for Elon. Furman's offense was led by Jaudon who was 2-for-7 with two RBI and Goodrich who posted a 2-for-2 performance with one run scored and one driven in.

The two teams will finish off the three-game conference set tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Elon's East Field.
