Cougars Tame Bulldogs

CHARLESTON, SC - The College of Charleston softball team scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to down Gardner Webb 5-2 at CSU Field. Darcy Johnson singled through the right side to plate to score Jacquie Rothey for the game-winning run as the Cougars improve to 3-0 on the season.

Rachel Stern pitched a complete game giving up four hits while striking out 11 in six and a third innings to get the win for the Cougars. Stacie Reichert went six innings surrendering six hits and striking out five and got the loss. The Bulldogs fall to 1-5 on the season.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the top of the first inning. Jennifer Wallace doubled to right center field plating Jessica Harrrell and Allison Murphy to take the early 2-0 lead.

The Cougars evened the game up in the bottom of the third inning with a pair of runs. Leshe Russell scored on a Rothey single to left field to put the first run on the board for Charleston. Rothey scored the first of her two runs in the game on a Bulldog fielding error to knot the game up.

Stern and Reichert combined to keep the offenses quiet until the bottom of the sixth when the Cougars sealed the game. Charleston added two insurance runs after Rothey plated to stay unbeaten for the season.

The game was originally scheduled to be a home game for the Cougars but was moved due to field improvements at Patriots Point. The contest was moved to CSU Field to follow the Charleston Southern-Gardner Webb. The game was called in the top of the seventh inning due to darkness at CSU Field.

The Cougars next travel to Columbia for the South Carolina Tournament this weekend. Charleston takes on Radford on Saturday at 9:00 to get the tournament underway. The Bulldogs host Jacksonville on February 22 at 1:00.
