CofC Cougars Extend Streak to 14 with Sweep over Birmingham Southern

Mt. Pleasant, SC -- The Cougars scored in the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game to pull victory away from the Panthers as the College of Charleston softball team swept Birmingham Southern by scores of 2-0 and 4-3 in action today at Patriots Point.

Charleston improves to 24-4 and keeps its winning streak alive at 14 games. Birmingham Southern drops to 14-24 overall.

The only runs of the first game came in the bottom of the first inning when Amanda Cone drove in Keyta Lawson. Cone would score the next at-bat when Jessica Schwartzkopf doubled to centerfield for the RBI and the 2-0 lead.

Rachel Stern picked up the win to go 13-1 on the year, giving up seven hits but no runs as the Panthers stranded the seven runners. Dawn Treadwell garnered the loss to fall to 6-9 on the year.

The Cougars scored a run in the first and two in the second inning to go up 3-0 before the Panthers started their comeback, pulling to within one run with two coming in during the third inning. Lacey Barth singled to centerfield to get on base and was able to come home after an error by the catcher enabled her to score and the batter, Nikki Rombough, to come home also. Birmingham Southern tied the game in the seventh after Barth singled in Lillie Bradfield.

Schwartzkopf led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and came home after Katie Scott grounded out to the pitcher to pick up the RBI.

Natalie Smith picked up her fifth win of the season to go to 5-2 and Kristina Villavicencio took the loss to go to 5-9.

The Cougars travel to Greenville, SC, this weekend to take on Furman in a three-game series starting Saturday at 1:00 pm.
