CofC Completes Series Sweep Over ASU Softball

BOONE, N.C. - The College of Charleston continued their long ball attack on Appalachian and rapped out 11 hits on their way to a 9-1 win over Appalachian in softball action from the Watauga County Softball Complex.
Appalachian (8-15, 0-3 SoCon) got on the board early when Mary Lutz (Brentwood, Tenn.) doubled down through the gap in left-center. Sarah Gough (Yadkinville, N.C.) then singled, advancing Lutz to third. Amber Handy (Huntersville, N.C.) delivered a single back through the middle to score Lutz, putting Appalachian ahead 1-0.
The College of Charleston (22-4, 3-0 SoCon) would tie the game in the second. Amanda Cone began the Cougar inning by singling down the left field line. Cone then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jennifer Schwarzkopf. Following a Melissa Creeger line out, Jennifer Rabun singled to left, plating Cone.
Charleston then blew the game open in the third when they jumped ahead 4-1. Amanda Cone hit a three-run shot to left center providing the lead. Charleston then added five in the fifth inning to take the 9-1 win.
Lael Rorie (Charlotte, N.C.) took the loss for the Mountaineers, while Rachael Stern picked up her 12th win of the year.
Appalachian will return to action on Tuesday, March 25 when they travel to Chapel Hill to take on ACC power North Carolina in doubleheader action. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
