CofC Cougar Softball Splits Opening Series
(February 10)

Rachel Stern threw a two-hitter to lead the College of Charleston over SC State, 14-2, in the second game of the softball doubleheader at Hillcrest softball complex in Orangeburg, SC. Three Cougar errors led to three unearned runs as the Bulldogs defeated Charleston, 4-3, in the first game.

SC State scored two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to go up 4-0 before the Cougars started their comeback in the sixth when two runs came in off an Amanda Cone single and an error by the leftfielder. Davis singled in the seventh to drive in Flowers for the third run, but the next batter struck out to end the Cougar threat. The Cougars had six hits and three errors while SC State had eight hits and four errors. Natalie Smith threw a complete game, giving up eight hits and one earned run for the loss.

Charleston exploded on offense in the second game for 14 runs off 13 hits as Stern contained the Bulldogs for just two hits and no earned runs. Jessica Swartzkopf went three-for-three with two runs and three RBI to lead the squad. Jacquie Rothey followed with a three-for-four effort and two RBI.

The College of Charleston travels to North Carolina A&T Feb. 19th, for a 2:00 pm doubleheader before heading to Charlotte, NC, to compete in the UNC Charlotte tournament Feb. 21-23.
