UNCG Softball Splits Opening Day at 2003 Carolina Invitational

Columbia, SC - Freshman Melissa Johnson pitched a complete game, six-hit shutout to give UNC Greensboro a 1-0 victory over Boston College Saturday at Beckham Field. The Spartans were then edged by the 20th-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks, 3-1, to finish 1-1 on opening day of the 2003 Carolina Invitational.
In the fourth inning of game one, with the score knotted at 0-0, Jennifer Aguilar (Sr./San Jose, CA) hit an inside the park home run to give the Spartans the lead, 1-0. One run was all Johnson needed as she scattered six hits over seven innings in her first game as a Spartan.
Boston College threatened to score several times, but the Eagles were never able to capitalize. Johnson gave up a walk and an Erin Mackey double in the second inning, before retiring Tekae Malandris on a groundout and Amy Swiderski on a strikeout to get out of the inning. The Eagles
