Molenschot, Netherlands – ETSU rising sophomore Matty Dodd-Berry captured medalist honors at the 2023 Dutch Junior Open, which concluded Saturday at Golf Club Toxandria in The Netherlands.
Following four sub-par rounds, Dodd-Berry won the event by three strokes with a 72-hole score of 11-under-par 277 (68-70-69-70). Dodd-Berry defeated the hometown favorite Loran Appel, who won the Dutch U22 Champion earlier this year and will be a freshman at College of Charleston in the fall.
Dodd-Berry got off to a strong start in Wednesday’s opening round where he fired a 4-under 68 thanks to bagging five birdies, 12 pars and one bogey. The reigning SoCon Freshman of the Year held a one-shot lead after day one and continued to lead following Thursday’s second round at six-under.
Appel caught Dodd-Berry in Friday’s third round as they were nine-under for the tournament, but the Buccaneer posted the second-lowest score in the final round to capture the crown – becoming the second ETSU men’s golfer to win this event. Dodd-Berry carded a 2-under 70 on Saturday, while Appel totaled a 1-over 73. Ireland’s Patrick Keeling went low on Saturday at 3-under 69.
Dodd-Berry, who joins Buccaneer Hall of Famer Keith Nolan (1992) to win the Dutch Junior Open, tallied 21 birdies and 41 pars over the 72-hole tournament. For the week, Dodd-Berry generated a 3.19 scoring average on the par-3s, 3.85 mark on the par-4s and a 4.50 average on the par-5s.
Gregor Graham, the 2022 champion, finished fifth at 2-under-par 286.
