GREENSBORO, Ga. – The 2023 Southern Conference Men’s Golf Championship will be played April 23-25 at The Oconee Course at Reynolds Lake Oconee in Greensboro, Georgia. This will be the third straight year the tournament will be played at the par-72, 7,393-yard Rees Jones-designed course.
This season’s tournament will be played with a traditional format of one round a day over three days.
The league’s eight teams – ETSU, Furman, Mercer, UNC Greensboro, Samford, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford – will be competing for the SoCon tournament title and an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals. The individual medalist will also earn an automatic regional qualification if he is not on the winning team.
ETSU will be looking for its third straight championship after winning its 22
nd title last season at Reynolds Lake Oconee. The Buccaneers posted a 39-under-par 825 to secure a 19-stroke victory over runner-up UNCG. A total of four teams finished under par in last season’s championship, with Furman and Western Carolina shooting 7-under-par 857 and 3-under-par 861, respectively, to claim the third and fourth place spots in 2022. ETSU had five players finish in the top 10, with redshirt junior Remi Chartier claiming medalist honors for the Bucs. The other Bucs in the top 10 were Paul Conroy at fourth, Mats Ege in sixth and Archie Davies, the 2021 individual champion, Algot Kleen and Ben Carberry tying for seventh.
The Bucs enter the 2023 tournament as the top-ranked SoCon team as ETSU is 33
rd in the Golfstat rankings, followed by Chattanooga at 47
th. UNCG is No. 48 and Furman is ranked 59
th to give the conference four teams ranked in the top 60 nationally.
ETSU owns 22 SoCon team titles, while Furman has 13 and Chattanooga has six to its credit. Furman’s last was in 2010 and Chattanooga claimed consecutive titles in 2012 and 2013.
The Buccaneers have a league-best 17 individual medalists to their credit, followed closely by Furman with 14. Western Carolina has five, and UNCG, Chattanooga and Wofford claim two each.
Furman sophomore Will Morlan, who leads the league with a 69.80 stroke average, enters the championship ranked No. 68 nationally. Ege is one spot behind Morlan in the rankings, while UNCG’s Nick Lyerly is at the No. 84 spot.
Eight SoCon golfers have won tournaments this season. Five teams have been victorious this season, including Chattanooga’s four team wins as the Mocs come into the championship having won its last two outings.
The Southern Conference Men’s Golf Championship boasts a rich history. Dating back to 1930, the tournament has produced winners such as Wake Forest’s Arnold Palmer (1948 and 1949) and Furman’s Brad Faxon (1983), both SoCon Hall-of-Famers, and current PGA TOUR pros Stephan Jaeger of Chattanooga (2012), J.T. Poston of Western Carolina (2014 and 2015) and William McGirt of Wofford (2001).
