ETSU’s Kleen named SoCon men’s golfer of the week

Shot 13-under 203 to win his first collegiate tournament

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU’s Algot Kleen has been selected as the Southern Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week for all competitions in the spring season up to this point. The selection is made by the league office.

Kleen began his spring season combining with teammate Mats Ege to get two victories during the Buccaneers’ match play competition against Augusta on Feb. 2. The pair won 3&2 in the alternate shot and won 1 up in the best-ball portion of the match. Kleen finished the day with a 5&4 victory in singles.

Kleen finished first at the Puerto Rico Classic, which wrapped play on Tuesday, to grab his first collegiate tournament win. The sophomore from Fiskebackskil, Sweden, posted rounds of 66-71-66 for a tournament score of 13-under-par 203. Kleen tied his career-best round score of 66 twice in the event and led the field with 17 birdies over three rounds. Kleen’s victory marked the second time a Buccaneer has won the Puerto Rico Classic, with the other coming in 1999 by David Christensen.

ETSU defeated Augusta 9.5 to 3.5 in its match-play event. The Buccaneers turned in a 25-under-par 839 performance to finish second at the Puerto Rico Classic, which featured eight nationally ranked teams and nine ranked individuals in the 13-team, 77-golfer field. The Buccaneers competed in Puerto Rico Classic for the 25th time this season and its second-place finish was the best in program history.

ETSU will be back in action on March 6-7 in the Wake Forest Invitational in Pinehurst, North Carolina.

Also nominated: Will Morlan (Furman), Nick Lyerly (UNCG), Matthew Smith (Samford) and Samuel Espinosa (Chattanooga)
