Mercer’s Mixon named SoCon men’s golfer of the week

Shot 15-under 201 to finish third and help set program record

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer’s Trey Mixon has been selected as the Southern Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week for all competition to this point in the fall. The selection is made by the league office and is the first one of the season.

Mixon earned a third-place finish at the Streamsong Invitational in Bowling Green, Florida, which wrapped play Tuesday. The sophomore from Macon, Georgia, who went to high school eight miles away from the Mercer campus, posted rounds of 65-71-65 for a tournament score of 201 (-15). Mixon achieved his first career top-five finish in the event as he had 19 birdies in the tournament's two days of play. He had the best score on par-5 holes of any golfer at the event as he had an average score of 4.33 on those holes.

Mercer finished the Streamsong Invitational fourth in the 13-team, 79-golfer field, with a 39-under-par 825 performance. That mark was a school record for the Bears in their first tournament of the season. The Bears shot 273 in the first round, 275 in the second, and 277 in the final round.

The Bears will play their next tournament in Spartanburg, South Carolina, as they will participate in the Carolina Cup on Oct. 9-11. UNCG is the only SoCon team that will be in action this weekend as its travels to Cincinnati, Ohio, to play in the Bearcat Invitational on Sept. 19-20.

Also nominated: Carson Kammann (ETSU), Will Morlan (Furman), Samuel Espinosa (Chattanooga) and Ben Jordan (Wofford)
