SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The 2021-22 season officially came to a close for ETSU Men’s Golf on Sunday afternoon as the Bucs were unable to make the cut in the NCAA Championship at the Raptor Course at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. The Buccaneers finished the third round with a team score of 26-over-par (306) as the wind continued to howl and the course refused to let up. ETSU finished the tournament 29th of 30 teams following Sunday’s event.
The Bucs were led by Mats Ege (Kristiansand, Norway) who posted a third-round score of 2-over-par (72), missing the cut line for the individual title by just two strokes. After a rough start of 4-over-par through the opening seven holes, Ege birdied the par-4 17th frame to climb to 3-over-par for the round. Ege used that momentum to light up the first five holes on the front nine. The Norwegian golfer birdied No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 to climb back to even-par for the day and 9-over-par for the tournament, sitting in a tie for the final spot into Monday’s round. However, a blunder on the par-4 6th hole set up a dramatic finish for the Cal State Northridge transfer. Following back-to-back pars on No. 7 and No. 8, Ege needed a birdie on the final hole to claw back into a playoff for the final spot. Unfortunately, a fairway bunker off the tee made things difficult for Ege as he settled for a bogey on the 54th hole of the championship, settling for a T-62nd finish at 11-over-par.
Ege was the lone Buccaneer to finish inside the Top-100 on the leaderboard as both Archie Davies (Carlisle, England) and Mats Ege (Fiskebackskil, Sweden) finish tied for 116th. Kleen posted a 6-over-par (76) final round with six bogeys and 12 pars. Davies concluded his season with an 8-over-par (78) following four bogeys and two double bogeys.
The top three teams heading into the championship are positioned first, second and third. Top-ranked Oklahoma is the lone team under par for the event with a team score of 1-under-par. The Sooners are followed by Oklahoma State (+3) and Vanderbilt (+5). The Commodores’ Gordon Sargent leads the individual leaderboard at 4-under-par, followed by Chris Gotterup (-3) of Oklahoma and Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra (-2) of Oklahoma State.
