SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (May 27, 2022) – The opening round of the 2022 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship proved to be tough as the Bucs had to take on the difficult Raptor Course at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., while also battling 105-degree heat. The Buccaneers concluded the opening day with a 17-over-par (297), a three-shot improvement from the opening round in the 2021 NCAA Championship.
The Bucs were led by Mats Ege (Kristiansand, Norway) with a score of 2-over-par (72). The Norwegian golfer parred the first five holes before a birdie on the par-4 15th hole saw him jump into red figures. However, Ege bogeyed three of the next four holes to drop to 2-over-par with eight holes remaining. The Cal State Northridge transfer then climbed back to even par with a pair of birdies in a three-hole span with five holes to play. Ege relinquished the strokes to the course with two more bogeys in his final five holes, concluding his round at 2-over-par (72).
Three different Bucs posted an opening round of 5-over-par (75). Archie Davies (Carlisle, England), Ben Carberry (Bonnybridge, Scotland) and Algot Kleen (Fiskebackskil, Sweden) each posted two birdies in their respective rounds as the trio are all tied on the individual leaderboard.
ETSU will be back in action tomorrow at 12:25 p.m. (3:25 ET) when the Bucs tee off on hole No. 1, playing alongside Ohio State (+20) and South Florida (+23) for the second consecutive round.
