GREENSBORO, Ga. – ETSU maintains an 11-stroke lead at the 2022 Southern Conference Men’s Golf Championship following Saturday’s second round of play at Reynolds Lake Oconee’s par-72, 7,393-yard The Oconee Course. Redshirt sophomore Remi Chartier leads the field at 13-under-par to pace four Bucs in the top 10.
The Buccaneers held a five-stroke lead over UNCG after round one but created some space in round two, shooting a collective 22-under-par 279 to complement their first-round 275 for a total of 554. UNCG and Western Carolina, the only other teams under par after day two, concluded the second round in second and third place, respectively, with the Spartans ending the day 11-under 565 and the Catamounts sitting five strokes back at 6-under 570.
Furman sits fourth at 1-over 577, followed by Chattanooga (583), Wofford (588), Mercer, (588) and Samford (599). The Mocs were one shot behind their Friday pace but jumped one spot in the team standings with a 7-over 292, the fifth-best round of the day.
Chartier posted a tournament-record and course-record score of 9-under 63, opening up an eight-stroke lead over teammate and round-one leader Ben Carberry to distance himself from the field heading into the final round. The Montreal, Canada, native, who led the field in par-3, par-4 and par-5 scoring, as well as birdies (15), concluded the second round atop of the leaderboard with an overall score of 13-under 131.
Carberry shot a second-round score of even-par 72 and sits in second with a tournament score of 5-under 139. Mats Ege and Algot Kleen posted identical 72s in the second round to remain inside the top 10 on the leaderboard and tie with UNCG’s Noah Connor for seventh. Ege finished the day with four birdies and four bogeys, while Kleen carded three birdies and three bogeys.
Furman’s Sam Lape, Chattanooga’s Paul Conroy and Western Carolina’s Jake Peacock all shot 4-under-par to conclude the second round in a tie for third. Lape fired a second-round 69, while Conroy shot a second-round 71 and Peacock carded a second-round 72. Peacock dropped a spot after shooting his second round even-par on the day, while Conroy moved up one spot and Lape moved up eight.
UNCG also saw four golfers earn spots in the top 10, highlighted by Nick Lyerly's 3-under 69 performance that places him tied for sixth at 3-under 141 with teammate Tommy Lamb, and Connor and Symon Balbin, who posted second-round scores of 72 and 73, respectively, to complete the round tied for ninth at 2-under 142. Randall Hudson, Connor and Balbin led the Spartans with five birdies each.
Western Carolina’s Tumi Kuld joins Peacock in the top 10 as he is tied for sixth at 3-under 141.
Wofford rounds out the individual top 10 with Matthew Larkin, who posted a 4-under 72 in the second to conclude the round at 2-under 142 to match Kleen, Ege, Connor and Balbin in a tie for ninth.
