Chattanooga's Wear named Men's Golfer of the Week

Shot 10-under 203 to clinch first collegiate victory at JT Poston Invite

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Following a first-place finish in the first collegiate start of his career, Chattanooga’s Braedon Wear has been selected as the Southern Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week for all competition from Sept. 22-28. The selection is made by the league office and is the second one of the season.

Wear earned his first collegiate victory at the JT Poston Invitational in Cashiers, North Carolina, posting consecutive rounds of 5-under-par 66 on Monday and an even-par 71 on Tuesday to secure his first win as a Moc. The freshman from Maryville, Tennessee, shot a 10-under 203 for the event, matching former All-American and current PGA Tour member Stephan Jaeger for the second-lowest 54-hole score in program history. Wear finished five shots ahead of 2021 All-American Ryan Hall of South Carolina, who is ranked fourth in the PGA Tour University Velocity Global Ranking.

The Mocs finished the JT Poston Invite third in the 14-team, 87-golfer field, with a 15-under 833 performance. Chattanooga shot 276 in the first round, 273 in the second, and 288 in the final round, pulling past Kennesaw State (-6), Belmont (-7), and Georgia Southern (-5). UTC’s second-round score tied for the second-lowest 18-hole score in program history and was the lowest since a 273 in the second round of the 2013 AutoTrader Collegiate. The opening 36-hole score of 549 for Chattanooga was two shy of the school record 21-under 547 at the 2007 Scenic City Invitational.

The SoCon men’s golf teams are back in action on Oct. 10-11, with Chattanooga, ETSU, and Furman competing at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate hosted by ETSU in Jonesborough, Tennessee, and Mercer and Samford competing at the Georgia State Invitational hosted by Georgia State in Duluth, Georgia. Western Carolina and Wofford compete at the Carolina Collegiate hosted by Wofford in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and UNCG competes at the Phoenix Invitational hosted by Elon in Burlington, North Carolina.

Also nominated: Ross Funderburke (Furman), Tobias Jonsson (Mercer), Jake Peacock (Western Carolina) and Matthew Larkin (Wofford).
