Meronk moves up leaderboard at Olympics

Poland native shot 2-under in second round

SAITAMA, Japan – Former ETSU men’s golfer Adrian Meronk had to wait until 6:35 p.m. (ET) on Friday evening to resume his second round in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after the round was suspended due to inclement weather.
 
Meronk resumed his second round on hole No. 15, kicking things off with a birdie on the par-4 hole. The Poland native then carded three consecutive pars to cap off his second round, finishing even-par (71).
 
The third round for Meronk began at 10:09 p.m. (ET), starting on hole No. 10, and he recorded three consecutive pars to begin his round. The former Buccaneer moved to red figures on the 13th hole with a birdie on the par-4. After giving the birdie back to the course with a bogey on the 15th, Meronk connected for his second birdie on the opening nine, this time on the par-4 17th hole.
 
Meronk took the turn at 1-under-par; however, he immediately fell back to even-par with a bogey on hole No. 1. Following a string of three consecutive pars, Meronk posted birdies on two of the next three holes to jump to 2-under-par for the round. The Poland product tapped in for par each of the final two holes, resulting in his first under-par round of the Olympics with a 69 (-2).
 
With the 2-under-par round, Meronk jumped six spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 46th at 1-under-par for the event.
 
Meronk will begin his final round at 7:14 p.m. (ET) on Saturday night, pairing with Rikuya Hoshino (Japan) and Garrick Higgo (South Africa).
 
The United States’ Xander Schauffele leads the field with a score of 14-under-par. Schauffele is followed by Hideki Matsuyama (Japan) at 13-under-par, while Paul Casey (Great Britain) and Carlos Ortiz (Mexico) are tied for third at 12-under-par.
