SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference released the 2021 women’s lacrosse championship bracket on Friday, as Furman claimed the No. 1 seed after taking home the regular-season title with a 4-0 conference record.
The 2021 Southern Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship will take place at Mercer's Five Star Stadium on May 6 and 8 in Macon, Georgia, for the second time after the Bears served as hosts for the inaugural Southern Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship in 2018.
Coastal Carolina, who competed in its first year as an associate member of the SoCon, claims the No. 2 seed and Mercer is the No. 3 seed. Wofford rounds out the four teams who qualify for the conference championship as the No. 4 seed.
The Paladins finished the regular season 11-4 and undefeated in league play for its first-ever No. 1 seed in program history. Furman will face No. 4 Wofford to open the 2021 SoCon Women’s Lacrosse Championship on Thursday, May 6, at 4 p.m. In the two teams’ regular-season meeting, the Paladins took home a 21-13 victory over the Terriers. Furman leads the conference in goals (222), ground balls (275) and points per game (21.53).
Coastal Carolina finished the season 10-6 overall, falling only to Furman in conference action, and will play Mercer in the second semifinal game on Thursday. The Chanticleers won by just one goal in their regular-season match against the Bears. Samantha Courtemanche scored the game-winning goal with just 11 seconds left to play in the 11-10 win. Coastal Carolina heads into the 2021 championship on a three-game winning streak. The Chanticleers lead the conference defensively with 154 caused turnovers, a 10.34 goals against average and a .456 save percentage.
Mercer is 5-6 overall with a 2-2 conference mark on the season. The Bears will wrap up their regular season on Sunday against Jacksonville in Macon, Georgia, at 1 p.m. In the team’s 18-9 win over Kennesaw State on April 24, five Bears scored three or more goals.
Wofford finished the season 2-8 overall and 1-3 in conference action. After dropping contests to Coastal Carolina and Mercer, the Terriers took home a 20-7 victory over Delaware State before wrapping up the regular season with a 21-13 loss to Furman.
Approximately 1,000 spectators will be permitted at the championship. Day passes will be $5 for ages 6 and up and children 5 and under and SoCon students with a valid SoCon school ID get in free.
The championship match will take place Saturday, May 8, at 12 p.m. and all games will be broadcast live on ESPN+. The tournament winner earns the league’s automatic bid to the 2021 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship.
