SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Coastal Carolina’s Monica Manley and Furman’s Avery Whitehead have been named the Southern Conference women’s lacrosse offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition from March 2-8.

Manley scored six goals and made two assists in Coastal Carolina’s two games last week, winning 11 draws and tallying eight points on the week. In the team’s conference-opening 18-5 win over Wofford, she shot 1.000 and scored three points on two goals and an assist. The freshman led the squad to a 12-7 win over Davidson on March 7 with a team-high four goals and one assist. Her assist against Davidson put the Chanticleers on the scoreboard, cutting into the Wildcats’ lead. Manley has started in every game this season and helped the Chanticleers improve to 5-0, the best season start in program history.

The Chanticleers return to action on Saturday, March 13, at home against Elon at 1 p.m. ET.

Whitehead earned this season’s fourth defensive player of the week honors after winning a season-high four draws and tying her season best of two caused turnovers for the third time this year in Furman’s 18-6 victory over Gardner-Webb. She was part of the Paladins’ defense that limited Gardner-Webb to 10 shots in the first half and only seven in the second. The senior from Memphis, Tennessee, forced the Runnin’ Bulldogs into 18 turnovers and just 9-of-16 on clear attempts. The 12-goal victory was the largest margin of victory by Furman since an 18-5 victory at Wofford on April 27, 2019.

Furman travels to VCU in Richmond, Virginia, on March 11 for a 4 p.m. opening draw.

Other offensive nominees: Hannah Demis (Furman) and Elisabeth Ralph (Wofford).

Other defensive nominees: Sarah Trupp (Coastal Carolina)
