Dover, Del. (Mar. 23, 2021) --- The Delaware State women's lacrosse team turned in a record-setting performance with a 22-13 victory over Wilmington University in the Hornets' 2021 home opener at Alumni Stadium this evening.
DSU set new team records for goals in a game (22) and period (14, in first period) to earn its first victory of the season.
The previous records were 18 goals in a game and 11 in a period vs. Howard in the abbreviated 2020 season. The Hornets won that game 18-9.
Delaware State's nine-goal win vs. Wilmington also tied the 2020 Howard contest for the Hornets' largest margin of victory in its nine-year history.
Also, Gwenna Gentle and Rosella Nardi scored a team-high six goals each to tie the school record for single-game scoring first set by Emily Etkins in 2015. DSU's Nina Dillard also set a career-high with four goals in the game.
Delaware State jumped out in front early with Nardi and Gentle scoring in the first two minutes to give the Hornets a 2-0 lead. Gentle scored her second goal at the 23:02 mark of the first period to give DSU a 4-0 lead. She finished the first period with five goals and Nardi scored three in the opening period to key the Hornets' 14-8 lead at the break.
After the Wildcats scored three of the first five goals in the second period to pull to within 16-11, the Hornets scored the next six to regain control of the game.
Nardi capped off the rally with her sixth goal of the game and eighth this season to give the Hornets a 22-11 lead with 8:46 left to play. Gentle leads the Hornets in scoring this season with 12 goals, while Nardi has moved into second in the scoring race.
The Hornets are back in action on Friday (Mar. 26) at Liberty.
