Coastal Carolina’s Courtemanche, Martell earn weekly honors

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Coastal Carolina’s Samantha Courtemanche and Claire Martell have been named the Southern Conference women’s lacrosse offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition from Feb. 23-March 1.

Courtemanche received her second straight weekly honor after the 15-7 win over Kennesaw State, scoring three goals and adding five assists, all in the second half of the game. She didn’t miss one shot during the game and earned a 1.000 shots-on-goal percentage. The graduate student’s eight points are tied for her career high, and she has scored a hat trick in all three of the Chanticleers’ games this season. Courtemanche leads the conference in total points on the season (19).

Martell earned this season’s third defensive player of the week honors, tallying 11 saves on 21 shots faced and a .578 save percentage on Saturday. She also recorded five ground balls and caused three turnovers, helping shut down the Owls’ offense and move the Chanticleers to 3-0 on the season. The sophomore from Verbank, New York, is averaging eight saves per game and leads the SoCon with a .578 save percentage and 6.33 goals against average percentage.

The Chanticleers will travel to Spartanburg, South Carolina, on March 5, to open conference action against Wofford at 3 p.m. ET. This game will mark Coastal’s first meeting ever against the Terriers.
