Newark, Del. -- Delaware scored the first goals and was never headed in a 20-3 victory over visiting Delaware State in the Hornets' 2021 women's lacrosse opener on Wednesday.

Eleven players scored for the Hens, led by Kendra Schweizer and Danika Swech with three goals each. Five UD players tallied two goals, while Kate Bradford assisted on five scores to lead all players with five points in the contest. 

Tamrin Swann, Gwenna Gentle and Emmy McGill each scored a goal for the Hornets.

Delaware (1-1) scored five goals in the first 12 minutes, including two by Swech to open up a 5-0 lead.
Gentle scored Delaware State's first goal of the season with 15:35 left in the opening period to cut the Hens' lead to 5-1.

Delaware answered with a seven-goal run, the final score coming with five seconds left in the period, to lead 12-1 at the half.

After UD scored the first two goals of the second half to lead 14-1, the Hornets responded with back-to-back scores. McGill scored the first goal and Swann found the net off a feed from McGill to pull DSU to within 14-3 with 16:28 left to play.

Delaware closed out the scoring with six goals in the final 15 minutes. DSU was outshot 44-9 in the contest. Hornet goal keeper Moe Brown recorded 16 saves, including 15 in the first half.

Delaware State returns to action on Mar. 1 to battle Sacred Heart in its 2021 home opener. Game time is 1:00 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
