SPARTANBURG, S.C. – ETSU’s Archie Davies has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week for all spring competition through Feb. 23. The selection is made by the league office.
 
Davies has averaged 70.83 strokes per round in a pair of loaded tournaments this spring, turning in five rounds of par or better and three in the 60s.
 
Davies opened his spring slate at the Southwestern Invitational in Westlake Village, California, on Jan. 25-27. In a field that included four teams currently ranked in the top 20 nationally – No. 3 Arizona State, No. 5 Pepperdine, No. 14 SMU and No. 20 San Diego State – Davies tied for 11^th place with a 4-over-par 220, overcoming an opening-round 77 to post a 1-under 71 and an even-par 72 in the final two rounds. Just two players finished the tournament with sub-par totals and nine of the 10 student-athletes to finish ahead of Davies were from one of the four top-20 squads, including medalist and current No. 5-ranked David Puig of Arizona State. The Bucs finished eighth as a team, 10 shots clear of ninth-place Cal.
 
At the Kiawah Invitational on Feb. 15-16, Davies tied for second in the 90-man field with an 11-under-par 205, turning in two season-low rounds of 4-under 68 sandwiched around a 3-under 69 for his best collegiate finish. The redshirt freshman from Carlisle, England, finished behind only Wake Forest’s Michael Brennan – ranked No. 4 nationally in the most recent Golfstat rankings – and three strokes clear of Clemson’s Jacob Bridgeman, who is third in the national rankings. As a team, ETSU finished fourth behind Wake Forest, currently ranked No. 2 nationally, Clemson (No. 9) and Kentucky.
 
ETSU returns to action March 14-16 at the General Hackler Championship at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
 
Also nominated: Keller Harper (Furman), Tyler Copp (Mercer), Justin Emmons (UNCG), Alex Cobb (Chattanooga), Louis Theys (Western Carolina) and Matthew Copeland (Wofford).
