SoCon names women’s lacrosse players of the week

Coastal Carolina’s Courtemanche, D’Orsaneo earn honors after season-opening wins

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Coastal Carolina’s Samantha Courtemanche and Emily D’Orsaneo have been named the Southern Conference women’s lacrosse offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition from Feb. 16-22.
 
Courtemanche opened the Chanticleers’ 2021 season tallying 11 points on eight goals and three assists, with a .750 shots-on-goal percentage. The Elliot City, Maryland, native paced the team offensively to wins against Radford and Winthrop with four goals on six shots in each game. She is among the top 10 in program history in goals (63), assists (48) and points (111) after returning to Coastal with an extra year of eligibility due to COVID-19. In the Chanticleers’ season opener against Radford, Courtemanche led the offensive attack with four goals and a free position shot in the 17-3 win. Just three days later, she scored an additional four goals against Winthrop and three free position shots in Coastal’s first program win over the Eagles. 
 
D’Orsaneo earned this season’s second defensive player of the week honors after becoming the Chanticleers’ all-time ground-ball leader (112) with seven ground balls and seven caused turnovers throughout the week. She tied her career high against Radford with four caused turnovers and five ground balls. In the 12-9 win over Winthrop, she aided the defense with three caused turnovers and two ground balls. The native of Centreville, Maryland, has started in all 63 games of her career.
 
The Chanticleers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 27, at 1 p.m. for their home opening match against Kennesaw State.
