SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG’s Nick Lyerly has been selected as the Southern Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week for all competition from Oct. 13-19. The selection is made by the league office and is the fourth one of the season.
 
Lyerly clinched the individual title at the Wolfpack Intercollegiate in Raleigh, North Carolina, posting three rounds below par to finish first at 10-under-par 206. In Saturday’s opening round, he fired a 7-under 65, achieving par or better on 17 of the 18 holes to tie for first with James Madison’s George Heath. The senior tallied eight birdies in the first round, including three straight on the first three holes, to shoot 5-under on the front nine and 2-under on the back. In the second round, which was interrupted by weather Saturday and completed Sunday, the Salisbury, North Carolina, native shot 1-under 71 with four birdies before shooting 2-under 70 with four birdies in the final round to seal the win. Lyerly was 4-under on the front nine in round three and was the only Spartan golfer to post an under-par round.

The Spartans finished second in the 16-team, 89-golfer field, completing the tournament with a 12-under 852 performance. UNCG shot 279 in the first round, 276 in the second, and 297 in the final round, grabbing wins over Virginia Tech (-4), Lipscomb (-3), Furman (-3), Elon (-1). The Spartans led the field entering the final round of the tournament, but NC State shot a final-round 6-under to capture its tournament by five strokes.
 
Four of the 10 SoCon men’s golf teams are back in action on Oct. 23-25, with Mercer, Samford, UNCG, and Wofford competing at the Grandover Collegiate hosted by the Spartans in Greensboro, North Carolina, while ETSU competes on Oct. 22-25 at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate hosted by Georgia Tech in Alpharetta, Georgia. Chattanooga and Western Carolina return to play on Oct. 25-26, as the Mocs and the Catamounts compete at the Black Creek Invitational hosted by Chattanooga in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
