SoCon names women's lacrosse players of the week

Detroit Mercy's Kaitlyn Wandelt and Furman's Meghan Deehan honored

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Detroit Mercy’s Kaitlyn Wandelt and Furman’s Meghan Deehan have been named the Southern Conference women’s lacrosse offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition March 3-9. The awards are selected by the league office.

Wandelt led Detroit Mercy to its first win of the season on March 5 in a comeback victory over Winthrop 11-8. The redshirt senior from Sayville, Maryland, was a key component as the Titans rallied in the second half for the win, scoring five of her game-high six goals after the halftime break. She added three goals and an assist on Sunday at Gardner-Webb to give her nine goals and one assist for 10 points during the week. Wandelt put 14 of her 18 shots on goal, took four draw controls and scooped up three ground balls overall last week.
 
The weekly award is the fourth of Wandelt’s career.
 
Detroit Mercy returns to the field on Wednesday to host Marquette at 1 p.m.
 
Deehan earned her second defensive player of the week nod this season with a solid showing against Lehigh on Saturday. The freshman from Milton, Georgia, set a new career-high with 13 saves, which marked the third time that she has recorded double-digit saves in a game this season. Deehan made 10 of her 13 saves in the first half and scooped up a pair of ground balls.
 
The weekly award is the second of Deehan’s career.
 
Furman will be back in action on Tuesday to host Bucknell at 4 p.m.
