SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNC Greensboro’s Zack Swanson has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week for all competition from Feb. 2-18. The selection is made by the league office and is the first one of the spring.
 
Swanson won the Spartans’ Martin Downs Collegiate at the Osprey Creek Golf Club in Palm City, Florida, over the weekend of Feb. 14-16, shooting a 16-under-par 200 to best the rest of the 94-man field and help UNCG to its second straight team title in the tournament. The Spartans finished with a three-day total of 41-under 823, setting a school record for the best 54-hole score. UNCG beat No. 49 James Madison by five strokes and was 30 strokes clear of third-place Samford.
 
Swanson opened his tournament with a 4-under 68 on Friday to sit in a tie for ninth after the first round. The junior from Waxhaw, North Carolina, then turned in a career-low round of 8-under 64 Saturday to vault into second place before firing another 68 Sunday to overtake teammate and eighth-ranked Jonathan Brightwell for his first tournament title.
 
UNCG returns to action Feb. 24-25 when it hosts the TPC Dorado Beach Challenge at TPC Dorado Beach’s Sugarcane Course in Dorado, Puerto Rico.
 
Also nominated: Samuel Espinosa (ETSU), Wesley Heston (Samford), Pierre Viallaneix (Western Carolina) and Ryan Marter (Wofford).
