Greenville, S.C. – Furman women’s lacrosse assistant coach Samantha Giacolone is one of 50 players that have been invited to the official tryout for the U.S. National Team that will represent the country in the 2021 World Lacrosse Women’s World Championship, it was recently announced.

Giacolone is one of six goalies invited to the tryouts which will be held December 4-6 at the US Lacrosse headquarters in Sparks, Md.

“Being selected as one of just 50 women to represent the U.S. in this final tryout is truly incredible,” Giacolone said. “I am beyond grateful for another opportunity to wear red, white and blue alongside some of the best talent in the world and some of my closest friends. It has been really fun to train alongside my own players throughout this process. When you are the one usually encouraging your players to reach their goals and now they are pushing you to achieve yours, it is really something special.”

The Manorville, N.Y., native is entering her second season at Furman, having joined the program in 2020 following a four-year collegiate career in goal at Notre Dame. She finished her career with the Fighting Irish as the program’s all-time leader with 605 saves and 47 wins. Giacolone garnered Inside Lacrosse Second Team Midseason All-American, First Team All-ACC and First Team IWLCA All-Region honors during her senior season.

As a senior in 2019, she was named one of 25 finalists for the Tewaaraton Award.

Giacolone was a member of the U-19 National Women’s Lacrosse team in 2014-15, representing the United States in Edinburg, Scotland.

“I am extremely excited for Samantha to be chosen to try out for the U.S. team,” said Furman head coach Rachel Whitten. “She is very deserving but, more importantly, earned this opportunity to showcase her talents. She has already proven herself to be a top goalie at the collegiate Division I level and I have no doubt, should she make the U.S. team, she will represent our country to the fullest. Her passion for lacrosse shines through in her play and we feel very fortunate to have her on staff at Furman working with our athletes. Samantha raises the level of play of those around her and I have become a better coach because of her. We wish Samantha good luck at the try outs!”

The world championship is being hosted by US Lacrosse July 7-17, 2021 at Towson University in Towson, Md.
