SoCon names women's lacrosse players of the week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Abby Shields and Central Michigan’s Dom Hamman have been named the Southern Conference women’s lacrosse offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition April 23-28.

A senior attacker from Vero Beach, Florida, Shields led the Paladins to a 18-5 victory at Wofford to help them clinch a share of the Southern Conference regular-season title. She totaled five goals, two assists and seven points against the Terriers. Her five goals was a season-high.

Shields ranks in the conference’s top 10 in goals per game (2.12), assists per game (1.59), points per game (3.71) and shots per game (4.59). This is her second offensive player of the week honor this season.

After earning the third seed in the upcoming Southern Conference Championship, the Paladins will face No. 2 seed Detroit Mercy on Thursday, May 2, in the second semifinal game, slated for 45 minutes after the 5 p.m. contest between No. 1 Mercer and No. 4 Central Michigan concludes.

Hamman, a goalkeeper from Walworth, New York, made 17 saves against Detroit Mercy on Saturday. She helped limit the Titans to just three second half goals, allowing the Chippewas to pull within one goal late in the game. The senior posted a .630 save percentage and added five ground balls. Her save total (95) now ranks second in the Central Michigan single-season record book.
