SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Furman’s Abby Shields and Detroit Mercy’s Allison McDonough have been named the Southern Conference women’s lacrosse offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition April 16-22.
A senior attacker from Vero Beach, Florida, Shields helped lead the Paladins to a 2-0, 1-0 SoCon record on the week. She totaled 11 points (four goals and seven assists). On Thursday against conference opponent Delaware State, she scored two of her four goals of the week, becoming Furman’s all-time leading goal scorer with 129 in her career. Against Howard on Sunday, her five assists on the day tied a school record.
Shields ranks in the conferences top 10 in goals per game (1.88), assists per game (1.50), points per game (3.38), shots per game (4.31). This is her first ever Southern Conference player of the week selection.
McDonough, a goalkeeper from Vero Beach, Florida became the first player in school history to surpass 200 career ground balls and second all-time in program history to reach 600 career saves. She made double figure saves (11) on Saturday, adding five ground balls and one caused turnover in the game, holding a 57.9 save percentage.
She currently leads the conference in ground balls per game (3.40) and is in the top 10 for goals against average (14.88), save percentage (.394) and saves per game (8.07). This is her second defensive player of the week honor of the season.
The Paladins are set to close out the regular season against Wofford on Saturday while Detroit Mercy welcomes No. 8 Michigan for a Tuesday afternoon matchup before closing out its regular season against Central Michigan on Saturday.
