SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNC Greensboro sophomore Nick Lyerly has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week for all competition from Feb. 10-26. The selection is made by the league office.
Lyerly has played in a pair of tournaments so far to open the spring season, turning in a 70.67 stroke average.
The sophomore from Salisbury, North Carolina, won the UNCG Martin Downs Collegiate in Palm City, Florida, on Feb. 10-12, firing a 9-under-par 207 to pace the 92-player field. The reigning SoCon individual medalist came in under-par in all three rounds, opening with a 4-under 68 and following that up with a 3-under 69 and a 2-under 70 as he helped the Spartans claim the team title in the 13-team tournament that included fellow SoCon programs Mercer, Samford and Chattanooga.
Lyerly was back in action at the Puerto Rico Classic from Feb. 17-19, finishing at 1-over 217 and tying for 26th in the 75-player field, which included 20 top-100-ranked players. Lyerly opened with a 1-under 71 before posting his only over-par round of the spring season so far, a 2-over 74. He closed with an even-par 72. UNCG finished 10th in the 15-team field, which included eight teams ranked in the top 50. The Spartans finished one stroke ahead of No. 5 Alabama, the highest-ranked team UNCG has ever beaten.
