Wofford finishes 15th at Hootie at Bulls Bay

AWENDAW, S.C. – The Wofford men’s golf team recorded a 15th-place finish at the Hootie at Bulls Bay, hosted by the Hootie & the Blowfish Foundation. The three-day, 54-hole tournament was held at the par-72 Bulls Bay Golf Club.

Wofford shot 306 (+18) in Sunday’s opening round and 312 (+24) in Monday’s second round. The Terriers, however, rebounded to shoot 290, just 2-over, in the final round on Tuesday. The third-round score was Wofford’s third-best round this season.

The two freshmen in the lineup led Wofford. Ryan Marter, playing in the No. 1 spot, tied for 61st. The freshman from Columbia, South Carolina, shot an 80 in the first round but rebounded to shoot 74 (+2) in the second round, Wofford’s best score of the round. Marter shot 71, 1-under, in the final round, and again recorded the best round of the day for the Terriers.

Fellow freshman Nick Willis also tied for 61st. The native of Cowpens, South Carolina, had the second-best round of the day for the Terriers on Sunday, shooting 75 (+3). He shot 78, 5-over, on Monday, but regrouped to shoot just +1 in the final round.

Patrick Bridges had Wofford’s best round of the opening day, carding a 74 (+2). He shot 10-over in the second round but bounced back to shoot a 73 (+1) Tuesday. His total score of 229 tied him for 67th. Evan Grenus, the second senior in the lineup, also tied for 67th. Grenus opened the tournament with a 77 (+5) and shot a 79 (+7) in the second round. He shot his best round of the tournament, a 73, on the final day and was one of four Terriers to shoot +1 or better on the day.

Patrick Talledo had rounds of 83 (+11) and 85 (+13) in the first two rounds, respectively, but improved to shoot 76 (+4), seven shots better than either of his first two rounds.

Mississippi won the tournament by a stroke over Kent State. The Rebels shot an impressive 19-under-par in the final round to finish 23-under for the tournament. Mississippi’s Braden Thornberry won the tournament, shooting 13-under-par after a 6-under-par round on Tuesday.  

Next up, Wofford hosts the Wofford Invitational on April 9-10 at the Country Club of Spartanburg. Wofford will play in the Clemson Invitational April 13-15 before concluding the season at the Southern Conference tournament April 22-24 at Pinehurst No. 9.
