SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For the second time this season, Furman attacker Abby Shields and Mercer midfielder Audrey Robertson have been named the Southern Conference women’s lacrosse offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition March 20-26.
Shields led the way offensively for Furman, scoring five goals and dishing out two assists as the Paladins were edged by Campbell 13-12 on Friday. A native of Vero Beach, Florida, Shields was 5-for-7 shooting, with all seven shots being on frame. The junior’s five goals tied her career high for goals in a single game. Shields was named offensive player of the week on Feb. 20 after scoring two goals and six assists in a pair of games for Furman. Shields currently leads the Paladins in points (16) and assists (8) and is tied for first in goals scored (8) with teammate Meg Lingo.
Robertson was a force defensively for Mercer on Sunday. The Stuart, Florida, native caused a season-high five turnovers and registered a career-high seven ground balls in the Bears’ 14-9 loss to Winthrop. The junior defender also registered a shot while winning four draw controls against the Eagles. Robertson, who was also named defensive player of the week on Feb. 20, leads Mercer in ground balls with 25 and caused turnovers with 16.
Both squads return to the field on Thursday. Mercer welcomes Central Michigan for the league’s inaugural match at 5 p.m. while Furman hosts Jacksonville at 6 p.m.
