Doyle, Spray named players of the week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Central Michigan’s Shannon Doyle and Detroit Mercy’s Taylor Spray have been named the Southern Conference women’s lacrosse offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively, for all competition Feb. 20-26.

A sophomore from Mars, Pennsylvania, Doyle led the Chippewas' in a 12-10 comeback-victory over American on Friday. The midfielder scored four goals including a pair of unassisted scores that tied and clinched the game, giving Central Michigan its first win of the 2018 season. Against La Salle on Sunday, Doyle scored two more goals in an 18-6 loss.

Doyle is coming off a freshman season in which she started all 17 games, scoring 33 goals and adding two assists. Central Michigan will have its first home game of the season on Wednesday, hosting Butler at 3 p.m.

Spray, a native of Winter Springs, Florida, was named the defensive player of the week for her effort in Detroit Mercy’s 16-8 win at American on Sunday. The senior defender caused three turnovers while picking up one ground ball, helping lead the Titans to their first win of the 2018 season.

As a junior, Spray played in all 17 games for Detroit Mercy, starting 14. Spray and the Titans will return to the field on Saturday, traveling to Butler for a nonconference matchup beginning at noon.

Also nominated for Offensive Player of the Week: Jordyn Beam (Detroit Mercy), Meg Lingo (Furman) and Delaney Irwin (Wofford).

Also nominated for Defensive Player of the Week: Kelsey Thompson (Wofford).
