SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG freshman Jonathan Brightwell has been named the Southern Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week for all competition from April 12-18. The selection is made by the league office and is the final one of the season.

Brightwell earned his second straight SoCon weekly honor and second of his young career after tying for seventh out of 90 competitors at the Wolfpack Spring Open in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Charlotte, North Carolina, native shot a 4-under-par 209 for his best career finish.

After opening the tournament with a 4-under 67, Brightwell tied the UNCG single-round scoring mark in round two, turning in eight birdies and 10 pars for an 8-under 63 to move to 12-under and into the tournament lead. His second-round effort helped the Spartans knock six strokes off their school record for a single round.

Despite closing with an 8-over 79, Brightwell earned the top finish among the three SoCon squads in the field, which included four top-50 teams and five top-100 individuals. Brightwell finished at least four strokes ahead of three of those ranked individuals. UNCG finished sixth overall, four strokes out of third.

UNCG and the other seven league schools return to action at the SoCon Men’s Golf Championship at the par-72, 7,118-yard Pinehurst No. 9 in Pinehurst, North Carolina, from Sunday to Tuesday. The Spartans, who lead the league with a 289.07 team stroke average, will be vying for their first SoCon title after posting runner-up finishes to ETSU in each of the last two seasons.
