SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG freshman Jonathan Brightwell has been named this week’s Southern Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week for all competition from April 5-11. The selection is made by the league office.
Brightwell shot an even-par 213 to tie for 19th in the 93-golfer field at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, North Carolina, over the weekend. The rookie from Charlotte, North Carolina, opened with an even-par 71 before shooting a 1-under 70 in round two. He closed with a 1-over 72 to finish ahead of three top-100 golfers. His 14 birdies for the weekend were good for third in the field.
Brightwell helped the Spartans to a sixth-place finish in the 16-team tournament, which included six top-50 teams. UNCG finished three strokes back of No. 27 North Carolina and 12 strokes better than No. 24 South Carolina.
The weekly award is the first of Brightwell’s career.
UNCG wraps up its regular season at NC State’s Wolfpack Spring Open in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Friday and Saturday.
